- IOL Fellowship @ Sankara Eye Hospital, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh
Duration 1.5 years 3-4 fellows taken every 6 months Selection- exam followed by interview Stipend- 40k (80k deducted from salary as caution deposit, refunded at end of fellowship) First 6 months is General Ophthal for all fellows and then fellows go to their respective depts... IOL fellows continue in General Ophthal for the rest of fellowship.. they see all cases in OP and then refer to speciality dept for management.. not allowed to treat any case on your own. You are started on SICS from the 3rd month in Gen Ophthal. First 6 months OTs are less, thereafter your chances increase. You are given advanced cataract cases and learn complication management (ant vitrectomy, iris claw) when doing SICS. Phaco cases are given only in last 6 months and that too, only 1 phaco case per week. Will get around 30 cases total in last 6 months. No advanced cases given for phaco. No topical phacos given. Work timings 9 am - 6 pm, work can go beyond 6 Dept is bit hectic No periphery postings No night duties in first 6 months, thereafter you get night duties once a month Sunday duties once a month You exit fellowship as a good SICS surgeon but phaco experience is inadequate and needs more exposure post fellowship. (Some fellows join back at Sankara for their paid short term phaco training to get more hands-on. This short term phaco training is currently available only to their fellows, has been discontinued for outsiders.)
- Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Fellowship review @ LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad
Duration = 3 yrs They have 4 main campuses (+1 new campus started recently but not taking fellows) so the number of fellows taken in each campus varies, usually 2-4 VR fellows per campus 4 main campuses are KAR campus (the main one) Vijayawada campus Vishakapatnam campus Bhubaneshwar campus Training is similar in all campuses. Earlier, the management used to decide which fellow to allot to which campus... but from 2026, they're allowing new fellows to decide their campus of choice. Selection - exam + interview Structure of fellowship programs in LVP First 9 months - cataract training phase, they train you to be fully competent so that you can handle even advanced cases. For some fellows, this phase can even be as short as 4 months (esp if they're already surgically proficient) after which they are sent directly to the secondary centre. So the remaining 5 months of such fellows will be added to their last phase (speciality phase) which is originally 15 months long but now becomes 20 months for these fellows. Next 1 year is spent at one of their secondary centres where you manage it entirely and do cataracts the whole year. This 1 year of service in secondary centre is fixed, it cannot be reduced like the first phase. Their secondary centres are high volume centres and see crowds of patients every day. The last 15 months is when you enter your speciality. After finishing your secondary centre service, you come back to your parent campus and start VR training. You also continue to operate cataracts through this phase. Academics - there are regular classes, happens in the main KAR campus, fellows in other campuses attend it online. OP is very hectic, you see a wide variety of cases Good surgical hands-on in all kinds of retina cases, majority of their consultants are usually fellows who join back after finishing, they are your primary trainers, towards the end you get to operate many retina cases independently. ROP exposure is good, you get lasers and intravit injections in ROP babies also. VR dept on non-OT days may finish by 8 pm but on OT days work can go on as late as 1 am at night, even later on some days because they keep operating emergencies through the night as they come. LVP doesn't hold camps- all their patients come directly or from their many secondary centres. Stipend is 50k for 1st 2 years, 70k for 3rd yr. So to summarize, their VR program is - Cataract training in first 9 months (can be shorter for some fellows) - Then 1 year of service at their secondary centre - Then 15 months (or more, if the first phase was shorter than 9 months) of formal VR training Some rules and regulations in LVP You have to punch in before 7 am every day. If you punch in at 7 or even 7.01 you will be marked absent for whole day. Similarly you have to punch out, if you don't, then also you are marked absent for that day. You are given 19 days of leave every year but if your leave exceeds 19 days then you will work extra days to finish your fellowship- for every 1 day extra of leave taken, you have to work 2 days in return. For eg if your leave has exceeded 5 days, you will have to work 10 days past your fellowship due date to complete it. So main takeaway point here- never ever ever forget to punch in before 7 am daily . Drop out rate in LVP is high, there are reports of fellows in diff depts quitting fellowshp midway. No penalty for leaving fellowship in between- no huge fines imposed or return of stipends demanded. But you do get blacklisted. You can never apply to LVP again if you leave midway. Non-vegetarian food strictly not allowed at all in campus.
- IOL Fellowship review @ Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
Duration 2 years 1 fellow taken every 3 months Stipend 40k in 1st yr, 50k in 2nd yr. OT starts after 3 months, you start with SICS. First 10 SICS happen in a training OT with an SICS trainer and then you are posted in regular OT and given 2 OT turns per week. You have only 2 turns and some times you may miss out on a turn because you'll be posted for camp or asked to go to some dept to help cover their OP when it gets busy. So first 6 months can feel frustrating but it's a phase all fellows go through. But after those 6 months, you start getting called more regularly (still 2 OT turns per week only) and the no. of cases given per OT increases gradually based on how well you pick up. They give you phaco training when 2nd yr starts but phaco turns subsequently become irregular. However, that changes in the last 6 months when they start calling you for phaco more regularly and give you more cases per turn. The promised numbers are 1000 SICS (you will do 2000/+ in 2 yrs) and 100 phacos (can cross 100 also)- these are normal NS2 cataracts. Advanced cases for phaco and ant vitrectomy are not given during the fellowship.. those can be mastered when you join back as Medical Officer (MO) post fellowship. [Compared to Madurai, your surgical chances as an MO are better in Coimbatore since the OT sisters push you to do more plus your senior mentor surgeons also encourage the same thing. Also you're assigned to training PGs and fellows as an MO, so you end up fine-tuning your skills very well.] OP is hectic, but nonetheless as mentioned before, you can still be asked to go to help out in other busy depts when they are short of people. There are also 1-month speciality postings in the 2nd yr of fellowship and during those postings you may even get procedures like intravit injections or laser PIs based on interest you show. Camps 1-2/month, night duties 1/month, Sunday duties once every other month or even later. Work timings 7.30-6 pm Academics- regular classes and IOL forums happen weekly.

- Short Term Medical Retina & Uvea Fellowship review @ Suvi Eye Hospital, Kota, Rajasthan
Duration can be customized acc to requirement. Charges 30,000 per month. Accommodation not provided (but they can help you with finding one). You are given intravit injections and lasers on daily basis (2-3 lasers, 2-3 injections usually) Retina op is very heavy (200+ pts every day) so it's busy. Daily Routine- • Report to retina op at 10 am • Tag along with Dr Nipun as he sees patients. You have to do IO for every case, plus you can also review OCT and FFA. Dr Nipun discusses every case with you, explaining findings and treatment plans. • Also get to see a lot of Uveitis cases as well. • Morning op runs from 10-2 pm. • Post lunch from 3-6 pm is OT.. you do injections, lasers etc. Once free after your procedures, you can also visit their cataract OT and observe phacos and other cases being operated there. If you're experienced or have completed a prior fellowship, you may even be allotted independent cases of pterygiums or DCR. Very knowledgeable and supportive staff. Highly recommended fellowship to go for if you want to build skills in retinal lasers and intravit injections. Also one reviewer recommends that if you are a total beginner at lasers, then you take the fellowship for minimum 2 months so you can master it. Just one month might be inadequate to become pro at retinal lasers.
