1 year fellowship Selection- based on interview only, no exams- depends on vacancy  40 k per month No cataract training included You get hands-on for FFA, ICG, OCT, OCT angio, UBM, injections including Ozurdex, methotrexate for oncology cases, vit tap Also get lasers like PRO, focal, SMPL, TTT, barrage You get more than 800 intravit injections & lasers more than 300-400 You're allowed almost to manage every case but you should have a good senior or consultant with whom you have a good rapport just to clear your doubts. Chennai has good Uvea exposure too Dept hectic but not that very toxic  ROP exposure is not that good No periphery postings, but have to go for camp and trial bandage and one night duty per month for sure.. enucleation calls are not there luckily. No classes, mostly self learning.   Starts from 7.30 till work over.. mostly upto 6.30 pm. No bond but if you discontinue fellowship in between, you have to return all your stipend.

Duration of fellowship- three program types- 1 year, 2 years and 3 yrs  3 yr programs are also called " sandwich programs " or MO (medical officer) fellowships since they include initial cataract training in first 1-1.5 yrs followed by speciality training later... while the 1 yr and 2 yr programs start you on speciality training earlier. Selection- every 6 months, written exam followed by same day interview. Fellows taken per session- variable depending on vacancy Stipend-  For the 3 yr program , it's 55k, you get 30-35k after deductions  For the 2 yr program  it's 24k, you get 10-14k after deductions  No stipend for the 1 year program. Cataracts are given. You start with SICS, and after 80-100 SICS you are started on phacos  You get trabs, numbers variable (~ 15-20) You might get complicated cataracts if competent. Self-management of complications happens on the go, you pick up after consultants handle few of your complications Cataract cases (both SICS and phaco) tend to be less for the 2 yr program, more numbers for the 3 yr one. You learn to do complicated cases also. Lots of lasers PI hands-on  Clinical exposure is very good, OP not too hectic. Work timings 9 -6 pm 1 night duty / month, 1 camp duty/ month, Sunday duties once a month or alternate month   Lots of peripheral postings with 1-2 months in each posting.. you spend only few months at the main centre. You get hands on for MIGS and tubes also, steps given, full cases are given based on yr proficiency  Academics- regular classes + Admission fees- 60k per year for the 2 yr and 3 yr programs. 10 lacs for the 1 year program.

Duration 2 yrs 1 fellow taken per session  Selection- interview followed by 3 day observership Stipend 50k  Over 2 years, you are rotated every 2 months between diff specialities.. there you see OP and also attend OT You get mostly cataracts in this fellowship, no other surgeries/ procedures  Surgeries start for fellow after 2nd or 3rd month  Start with SICS, after about 100 SICS or whenever they feel you are proficient in SICS, they start you on phaco  OT is twice a week You get to do phaco in normal... advanced cases are given based on skill. You get around 70-80 phacos  (You are given only camp pts to operate and they are more common in winters, cases tend to be lax in summers when it's mostly private pts getting operated) No training for managing complications per se, usually managed by consultants No topical phacos. Classes may happen weekly but it is irregular. OP starts from 8.30 am, but on days when you have pre-op duty, you have to report by 8. Work finishes by 5.30 but may go on till 7 pm sometimes (if you have evening op) On call duty- you share call duties with other speciality fellows so your turn is determined accordingly Sundays camp duties are frequent, sometimes Sundays in succession. Dept is very hectic, esp since you have to manage pre-op workup and see post op pts also on your own as well as also see OP.   They also have Cornea, Glaucoma and VR programs but you can do these only after finishing the 2 year Comprehensive program first.

(Please note- Shroff Eye Centre is NOT the same as Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital) Duration 6 months 1 fellow taken every 3 months  Selection- interview  Stipend 20k  You start your day at 7.30/8 am and are posted with 2 retina consultants per day, 1 consultant in morning half and another in the afternoon  You see retina OP and manage cases. No OT exposure per se but if you're interested, they will let you go to OT for observation  You learn primarily retinal lasers and intravit injections- only in charity cases For this you are posted every Wed and Fri to 2 different charity clinics where you manage OP and bring pts in whom to do lasers & injections. You start giving intravitreal injections from 2nd month. You get to give around 20-25 injections over 4 months. Retinal lasers are given only in last 2 months (once a week).. so you get 8 laser postings where you do lasers all day (around 5 cases per day).. you get PRP, barrage, sectoral etc  LIO is not given but you can request the consultant to teach you when a case comes. ROP exposure is minimal, very less cases come here. Uvea exposure is nil since that's handled by a separate Uvea dept Classes are there every week, you have to present by turn, usually 1-2 times in 6 months  Dept is chill, consultants are friendly. Good program, esp for those who did not have much retina exposure in PG If you already know to do lasers/injections and only want numbers, this program may not be worthwhile.
